Here we have
an extremely rare curved top, originally hide covered trunk ca:1845, probably deer hide. Unfortunaley
the hide was dry rotted to the point of breaking on contact. It has leather trim with hand made brass tacks. The original
leather handles are still as strong as the day were put on. On the top notice the oval of brass tacks with the intials
"M.S.N" inside, probably added at the time of purchase by its owner.
After all
the hide was removed the entire trunk was sanded down to a smooth surface and given three coats of Formby's Tung oil to protect
the wood for another 100 years . All the silver brass tacks on the trim were removed polished to a shinny finish. The
bottom of the trunk was also sanded and painted black as it was originally. The lock came with its original key, but the top
latch was missing which is very common for trunks of this era. We replaced the missing latch with one from around the 1840's
time frame, it works perfectly. The 163 year old leather trim had to be cleaned of dust & dirt and reinstalled back in
its place.
Of course
the Otis L Allen label had been removed during restoration, repaired to the best of our ability then attached to its
original spot were it sits once again.
This is truly
a unique rare trunk in unbelievable condition for a trunk over 160 years old.
These don't
come around very often,
so
don't hesitate purchasing a piece of American history.
