This trunk
was purchased from my good friends Doug & Janet of Framingham on November 18th, 2006. This Humpback leather covered trunk is a fine example of pure craftsmanship, very sturdy & well maintained. Most
of the leather was coming off & all had to be removed. Both the entire interior & exterior of this
lovely lady was sanded down to a smooth finish. All the brass top nails were still intact & were all polished back to
a beautiful shine, as well as the latch & lock. All metal tin was stripped of any rust & old paint, then repainted
with Rust-oleum glossy black. The musty smelling wallpaper inside was removed & then completely sanded down to remove
any stains, chips & glue. All the wallpaper trim around the inside edges of the trunk lid & the lithograph of the
man fox hunting was removed & restored. Once the trunk was completed they were put back into place. Both leather handles
were replaced with new ones as one was broken. New end caps were added to replace the old broken ones. The metal bottom was
rusted out & a new bottom was installed to protect it from any damage. The original insert tray was missing so a replacement
was made.
Both draw
bolts springs were broken & replacements had to be remade, they are both in fine working order now. The entire interior
& exterior of the trunk was given five coats of Formby’s Tung Oil for protection & a very nice shine. Altough
it's not the original key, this trunk does have a replacement key to fit the lock. This trunk is now ready to last another
100 plus years. .
