Like our extraordinary master craftsman John Head (collection) , Coleman, FL, we are once again excited
to list another expert craftsman Jim Cardoza (Collection) of San Jose, CA. Jim is fairly new to the trunking world,
but his work speaks for itself. Notice the rich detail in embossed metal. Believe me, it takes many hours of painstaking
brush strokes and patience for these results. This trunk is absolutely gorgeous, but we'll let Jim tell you more about
it:
BEAUTIFULLY RESTORED HUMPBACK EMBOSSED METAL ANTIQUE TRUNK
This humpback trunk was made around 1880. This is very well made with cast steel latches, lock assembly,
wheels and lid lifter. Also adorned with decorative, yet sturdy, slat clamps and 3 hardwood runners on the bottom. This trunk
has an extremely rare “wicker” style embossed metal covering. Over 1200 square inches of this classic looking
metal adorn this trunk. Also very rare, this trunk has its original interior intact. Beautiful hardwood slats, new triple
stitched leather handles, and a working lock with key.
I completely cleaned, and sanded the interior as well as the oak slats
(including the bottom slats), paying attention to the areas around the slat corner pieces, attaching nails, and edges. I then
coated all the wood with a mixture of low sheen Tung Oil. The metal on the trunk was cleaned, and many pieces were taken to
their original steel finish. I used a Dremel tool to get all the hard to reach places such as corners and hasps. The lock
assembly was cleaned and oiled and the Brass key trim polished. I then matched an original key for the lock. I hand painted
the embossed metal on this trunk with colors to match the original scheme. The embossed metal has over 6,500 raised areas,
taking over 10,000 brush strokes to complete. I replaced the hasp springs, and all the nails were tightened up and missing
ones replaced (never screws!) The corner metal was painted Black to match the original, baked on, Linseed oil finish. The,
very hard to find, interior tray was sanded smooth and real wood veneer covers both tray tops. Original style leather hinges,
and hatbox hasp were used.
I restore these valuable antiques to the
highest degree of craftsmanship. If nothing but the best, simply won’t do, then this timeless treasure is for you.
