This trunk was purchased on April 10th, 2004 from a guy in Quincy, MA. This trunk was part of a package deal when we bought two other trunks that he was selling. We wanted nothing to do with this very large humpback trunk. As the pictures show, someone had painted the entire trunk inside & out with yellow lead paint. She sat in storage for a year before we took on the task of restoring it back to the condition she now sits in. It took almost two full years to complete the restoration as the yellow paint simply wouldn't come off. This trunk was built by the Lowell Trunk Manufactory in Lowell, Ma. The original label was still inside on the top lid, but we haven't been able to restore it back just yet. This mammoth is quite beautiful and weighs close to 75 lbs. Most of the original interior parts were gone, including the insert tray. Once again John Head built a great replacement tray for her, with  three different compartments throughout the tray itself. All the metal trim was stripped of the nasty yellow paint & repainted with Rust-oleum glossy black paint. All twenty oak slats that cover her were removed, cleaned of paint and stained with red oak stain to give her a rich finish. The lock was attached to the trunk, but the latch had been taken off by someone years before. A antique replacement was ordered then re-installed which now allows the trunk to once again lock, this lady comes with her original key as well. There are four cast iron casters on the bottom which helps a lot when moving her around. The entire trunk was sanded many, many times to removed the yellow paint, then coated with Formby's Tung oil, she took about seven coats as the wood was very dry from all the years being covered by paint. She has a great inside lid, with a few compartments for extra storage. This baby is a great conversation piece & stands out in any room. She is quite large with plenty of storage for blankets, linens & family treasures. We've included a picture with our trusted guard dog Tasha to give you a better idea of her size.Makes a great gift for you or a loved one.
